What is religion and why do humans seek it?

Is it as Mitroff and Bennis say in The Unreality Industry. "If men can't control the realities with which they are faced, then they will invent unrealities over which they can maintain the illusion of control."

Or is it a result of our specialized brain's need for stimulation? In other words, do we need to play to develop and maintain our sanity?

Is there a religious impulse hardwired into the species, that pushes us beyond ourselves and our immediate concerns?
