John Taine

1883-1960
Real name—Eric Temple Bell

US Mathematics Professor at Caltech who wrote sci-fi under the pseudonym John Taine. He was born in Scotland. His first novel was The Purple Saphire, a lost-world fantasy written in 1924. Writing for the sf pulp magazines, he helped expand the boundries of the genre with his stories of time-travel and evolution gone awry.

He also wrote many non-fiction books, best-known of which was Men of Mathematics
